Portrait sessions include cake smashes, birthday sessions, and personality portraits. These sessions generally last between 20 and 40 minutes, depending on how many people are being photographed.
My style is very organic and simple. My goal is to provide you with classic, timeless images. For that reason, I do not use any props, bold colors, or elaborate setups.
Children under three should be fed and well rested prior to our session in order to reduce the likelihood that they will be fussy during our session, babies. Of course, this cannot always be timed perfectly so time is allotted within a session for snacks, diaper changes, etc.
Below are some additional tips to ensure a successful portrait session.
Cakes for Cake Smash Sessions
If you have added a cake to your package, we will contact you a few weeks before your session to discuss the cake design. If your child has any allergies, please let the studio know as soon as possible.
If you will be supplying the cake, please choose a simple design with subtle colors. A “semi-naked” six-inch white cake, with edible decorations, is a great choice. I’m happy to make bakery recommendations!
What to Wear
Clothing choice is an integral part of your final images. Choosing the right tones and fabrics helps to guarantee beautiful images! For in-studio sessions, soft, neutral tones work best (whites, creams, soft blues and pinks). Bright colors and black, navy and dark-wash denim do not work well in the studio and should be avoided if possible.
Below I’ve outlined a few things to consider when selecting outfits for your child. If you’ll be incorporating family images into your session, you will find clothing suggestions for the whole family below as well.

The Studio Wardrobe
When you’re a client of Kelli Dease Photography, you also have access to my studio wardrobe. Selections are available for the whole family. All of our pieces have neutral tones, and options for moms and little girls have soft, feminine details. For baby we have knit diaper covers (light gray and soft cream) as well as a few neutrally colored outfits that work great on both girls and boys. Adult sizes range from size XS to XL. Children’s sizes start at 6 months. You can take a peek at some of the options here. Keep in mind that this is not everything, and pieces are being added all the time! (Pieces for children 5 and older are a bit more limited, so be sure to review your options with the studio prior to your session.)
If you would like to come in, browse through the wardrobe and try things on, just contact the studio to set up a wardrobe consultation.
If you would prefer to bring your own clothing, please adhere to the guidelines below. And if you feel like you need a little help, we offer styling services for all of our clients. Just contact the studio and let us know!
Colors and Coordinating
My goal is to capture authentic images of your children and/or your family. Select clothes that reflect your personal style and taste rather than forcing yourselves into something trendy or outside of your comfort zone. The following suggestions are simply provided as guidelines:
For Baby:
- Something simple like a onesie, or even just a diaper, works best. If you’re doing a cake smash, remember to choose washable fabrics. For dresses, please bring bloomers or a diaper cover if you would rather not have underwear or a Pampers logo in your pictures! For onesies, shirts, and dresses, keep colors neutral and soft (cream, gray, white, light blue, etc.) and avoid logos, cartoon characters, and fold-over collars. Shoes are not necessary.
Kids ages 2+:
- Girls should wear simple and neutral colored dresses or rompers with a bit of texture or feminine detail. Be sure to include bloomers on the little ones so diapers or underwear don’t show! A coordinating, textured button-up sweater is great for a layered look.
- Boys look adorable in linen or cotton shirts, and soft chinos or shorts. Suspenders can be added for a bit of layering.
For Mom:
- Simple and neutral colored clothing in muted tones works best: Whites, creams, soft grays, light shades of pink, rose, peach, taupe, etc.
- Bohemian or peasant-style maxi or midi dresses with a subtle texture, such as lace.
For Dad:
- Men should wear chinos or other casual style bottoms, in light, muted tones.
- Solid colored tops, such as a Henley or t-shirt, in soft, neutral tones. Layers are great; wear the t-shirt under a crew- or v-neck sweater or jacket.
What Not To Wear
- Anything with logos, graphics, or bold patterns
- Black or darkly colored clothing
- Athletic shoes (for parents and siblings)
- A palette of all white or white and khaki
- High-collared shirts
- Large hair bows
- Formal wear
- Baseball caps (or any brimmed hats, since they cast a shadow on the face)
Where to Shop
Zara Kids is hands-down my go-to store for baby clothes. The fabrics and textures are perfect, the prices are reasonable, and the shipping is fast. H&M Kids is a good runner-up. Some other favorites include Amazon, Carters, and Baby Gap. If you find something online that you think might work, but you’re just not sure, just send me the link and I’ll let you know what I think!
What to Bring
- Tissues or facial wipes
- A brush or comb
- Snacks (choose something small, clean & easy to eat)
- Any special items you would like included in the photo session
If we’re doing a cake smash, things can get messy! An extra change of clothing is a must. Sometimes there’s no avoiding getting a bit of frosting on yourself, so you may also want to bring an extra top or pair of pants for yourself.
Bring a small towel and plenty of wet wipes for clean-up.
