I’ve been doing this for a while. I’ve seen a lot of trends come and go: babies hanging from branches, babies stuffed into over-sized teacups, newborns fast asleep on the shelves of a bookcase. I will admit to none of the above, but I do like a cute basket shot once in a while. As photographers, we are always striving to be creative and different, but sometimes I feel that we (I) lose sight of what we’re trying to capture in the first place: those first few days of a baby’s life. The wrinkles, the eyelashes, the way that they curl their toes and ball up their little fists. They change and grow so incredibly fast in those first few weeks and months. Photos are our way of remembering the smell and the softness of their flaky skin, and the way that they twitch their lips into a “smile” as they are drifting off to sleep, long after those moments have passed.

For me, newborn photography is all about creating simple, natural newborn images like these. Timeless, no-frills photographs that will never go out of style.
