Planning a Family Photoshoot with a Newborn

Bringing home a new baby is a huge moment. While the days and weeks leading up to the birth can feel like they’re crawling by with anticipation, once your baby arrives, you’re suddenly swept into a whirlwind. The nights may feel endless with sleepless hours, but somehow the days seem to fly by in the blink of an eye. Capturing those early moments with a family photoshoot is one of the best ways to freeze time and hold onto the memories.

If you’re thinking about scheduling a newborn session that includes the whole family, you’re in the right place. Whether this is your first baby or your fourth, I’ve got plenty of advice and inspiration to help guide you—no matter what your version of a newborn session looks like.

Let’s dive into what to expect, how to plan, and how to make the most of your family newborn photoshoot, no matter the size or makeup of your crew.

Including Older Siblings in Family Photos with a Newborn

Let me start with the obvious: older siblings are usually much more cooperative than toddlers. A newborn photoshoot with a toddler is a whole different ballgame, but we’ll get to that. For now, let’s focus on giving older siblings a chance to shine in their new role as big brother or big sister.

At Kelli Dease Photography, my approach is always to keep things simple and relaxed. Older siblings might feel nervous about holding the baby or pressured to “perform” during the session. But my goal isn’t perfection, it’s connection. While I always make time for the classic “everyone look at the camera and smile” photos (grandparents love those!), the most meaningful moments often come when a sibling is quietly peeking at the baby or leaning in for a spontaneous kiss.

Including Toddlers and Young Siblings in Family Photos with a Newborn

Got two under two? You’re in good company. Families with younger siblings and a newborn often worry that a session will feel chaotic. I’d be lying if I say that it won’t, but trust me when I say the magic still happens. My studio is calm and cozy, sessions are planned with nap schedules and snack breaks in mind, and every client receives a detailed prep guide with tips and tricks for ensuring things go as smoothly as possible.

We keep poses flexible and expectations realistic. A perfectly posed smile might be hard to come by, but those curious glances toward the baby or a shy snuggle into mom’s shoulder often end up being the most meaningful shots. You’ll be surprised by how much we can capture in such a short time.

What If Siblings Don’t Want to Participate?

This happens more often than you think! In my over 17 years of experience as a newborn and family photographer, I’ve met many children who are less than thrilled to have pictures taken with their new sister or brother.

A new baby can be a big adjustment, and siblings might not feel ready to share the spotlight. That’s totally okay. I never force it. Instead, we take breaks, follow their lead, and find gentle ways to bring them in. We let them hang out off-camera and capture the newborn solo for a bit. Sometimes just stepping back is enough to make them curious enough to come back in on their own.

And if all else fails? We roll with it. We capture what we can—even if it’s a silly face or a tiny tantrum. It might not be what you pictured, but it’s real, and sometimes those honest moments turn out to be the most memorable. Most of the time, children come around and we end up getting the shot. But if it just isn’t happening that day, don’t worry. There will be so many chances in the years ahead to capture beautiful sibling photos.

Larger Families and Blended Families with a Newborn

Whether your crew includes older step-siblings, a mix of ages, or a beautifully blended family dynamic, everyone is invited to be part of the session. When you book, you’ll fill out a brief intake form that gives me insight into your family’s unique makeup – who’s who, how everyone connects, and any special relationships you’d like to highlight. That information helps guide the session so we can capture meaningful combinations and interactions that reflect your real-life bond. The goal is always to make sure everyone feels included and valued, and to create a set of images that truly represents your family as it is right now.

Outdoor Family Newborn Photos

While most of my newborn sessions take place in the studio, I also love photographing families outdoors when the weather cooperates.

If you’re dreaming of soft golden light, tall grasses, and a relaxed, natural backdrop, an outdoor newborn session might be the perfect fit. These sessions are best planned for mild, sunny days and typically take place in the early evening for that dreamy light.

Outdoor newborn sessions work especially well for larger families and slightly older babies (6 weeks+). Once your baby is past the super sleepy stage that is ideal for posed newborn photos, we’ll shift the focus of the session to the family as a whole, creating images that highlight your family’s unique dynamic, filled with warmth, laughter, and love.

Why I Love Studio Newborn Sessions

A studio newborn photoshoot offers the best of both worlds: a quiet, controlled environment and soft, natural lighting that flatters everyone. There’s no rushing, no worrying about the weather, and no need to clean your house before I show up with my gear.

In the studio, baby stays cozy and calm while we move through a gentle flow of photos. We’ll start with baby-only images and then bring in siblings and parents as we go. I provide simple, neutral wraps and backdrops, so your photos feel timeless and focused on your family’s love and connection.

If you’re feeling unsure about planning a newborn family photo session, you’re not alone. Between sleepless nights and endless to-do lists, it’s easy to push photos to the back burner. But these early days go by fast, and one day you’ll be so glad you made the time.
