Fall color in Connecticut typically peaks in mid-October, depending on where you are in the state and how the weather has been. That’s usually the sweet spot for those golden leaves and warm afternoon light.
For the best lighting, I schedule most sessions during “golden hour,” which is about 60–90 minutes before sunset. The light is softer, more flattering, and it gives everything that dreamy, golden glow.
Early, Peak, or Late October?
Connecticut foliage doesn’t flip like a switch, so here’s roughly how the season tends to play out. Early October gives you the first warm tones with plenty of green still mixed in, plus smaller crowds. Mid-October is usually peak, when the reds and golds are at their loudest. That’s the window most families want. Late October leans into deeper rust tones and a few bare branches, which some people actually love for a moodier, end-of-season feel.
I watch the leaves every year because peak can shift by a week or two depending on the weather, and I’ll tell you honestly if your date is going to land early or late.

You don’t have to go far to find a perfect fall backdrop. I have a go-to spot in Simsbury with a mix of tall grasses, colorful trees, and soft natural light.
