When and Where to Take Fall Family Photos in Connecticut

Fall family photo season in Connecticut is short but spectacular. If you’ve been wondering when to take fall family photos or where the best locations are, I’ve got you covered.

In this post, I’ll share my favorite times of day for that dreamy golden hour light and my go-to timeline for catching peak foliage (hint: it’s usually mid to late October here in Connecticut, but I always keep an eye on the leaves). I’ll also break down the best places to take family photos around Simsbury and beyond, from open fields with tall grasses to quiet trails tucked away from the crowds.

Plus, we’ll talk about how the light changes in fall and what that means for your session time. If you’re a fellow photographer trying to plan mini sessions or a parent trying to choose the right day, this post will help make the most of that beautiful autumn light.

The Best Time and Place for Fall Family Photos in Connecticut

Connecticut is at its most magical in the fall. With vibrant colors, soft golden light, and crisp air, it’s no wonder it’s one of the busiest seasons for family photos. If you’re wondering when and where to schedule your session, here’s what you need to know.

When Should You Take Fall Family Photos?

Fall color in Connecticut typically peaks in mid-October, depending on where you are in the state and how the weather has been. That’s usually the sweet spot for those golden leaves and warm afternoon light.

For the best lighting, I schedule most sessions during “golden hour,” which is about 60–90 minutes before sunset. The light is softer, more flattering, and it gives everything that dreamy, golden glow.

Early, Peak, or Late October?

Connecticut foliage doesn’t flip like a switch, so here’s roughly how the season tends to play out. Early October gives you the first warm tones with plenty of green still mixed in, plus smaller crowds. Mid-October is usually peak, when the reds and golds are at their loudest. That’s the window most families want. Late October leans into deeper rust tones and a few bare branches, which some people actually love for a moodier, end-of-season feel.

I watch the leaves every year because peak can shift by a week or two depending on the weather, and I’ll tell you honestly if your date is going to land early or late.

Where Are the Best Places for Fall Photos in CT?

You don’t have to go far to find a perfect fall backdrop. I have a go-to spot in Simsbury with a mix of tall grasses, colorful trees, and soft natural light. Some years the field gets mowed later in the season, which opens up a wide field with colorful hills behind you. Prefer stone walls or a covered bridge? We can plan a custom location. Most of my fall families come from Farmington, West Hartford, Avon, and Simsbury, so wherever you’re driving from, there’s a pretty spot close by. I’ll help you pick the right one based on the look you’re going for and what’s in peak color when your date arrives.

Pro Tip: Book Early

Fall sessions fill up quickly, especially weekends. If you want that peak foliage look, the earlier you book the better. And if the weather doesn’t cooperate? I always build in flexibility so we can reschedule if needed.

At Kelli Dease Photography, family sessions are never one size fits all. We offer a range of session options to fit your budget, family size, and the number of final images you’re hoping for. Fall Family Photo Questions I Hear a Lot

What’s the best time of day for fall photos?

Golden hour, about 60 to 90 minutes before sunset. The light is softer and more flattering, and it makes those autumn colors glow.

What should we wear?

Earthy tones and soft neutrals photograph beautifully against fall color. I put together a full guide on what to wear for fall family photos, and I’ll help you plan outfits before your session too.

Do you photograph babies and toddlers in the fall?

All the time. Younger kids do great outdoors when we shoot near golden hour and keep things relaxed. If you have a little one (or one on the way), a fall session folds right into your family and children’s sessions with me.
