The first birthday is a milestone that’s hard to describe until you’re in it. One minute you’re leaving the hospital with a baby who can barely hold their head up, and a year later there’s a small person crawling toward your phone with clear intentions. It goes fast. Getting in front of a first birthday photographer in the Farmington Valley, Connecticut is something a lot of parents mean to do, and then realize, a few weeks after the party, they wish they’d actually planned.

At my studio in Farmington, CT, first birthday sessions are one of my favorite milestones to photograph. Not because of the milestone itself, but because one-year-olds are at the exact age where they have opinions but no self-consciousness, and that combination is surprisingly good in front of a camera.

Why Party Photos Aren’t the Same Thing

Birthday party photos have their place. They’re part of the day. But they’re also blurry, lit badly, and full of the back of someone’s head while the actual birthday kid is off in the corner being ignored by the cake.

A dedicated first birthday session is a completely different thing. The whole session is focused on your child. There are no guests to manage, no caterers walking through the background, no one asking you where the extra napkins are. Just your baby, at this exact age, documented well.

Parents often tell me the first birthday portraits end up being the ones that go on the wall. Party photos end up in a folder on someone’s phone.

What a First Birthday Portrait Session Looks Like

First birthday sessions at my Farmington, CT studio run the same way as my other milestone sessions. I work with the baby, not against whatever mood they’ve arrived in. Most kids need a few minutes to settle into a new space and get comfortable with a new person, so I build that time into the session. By the time we’re actually shooting, they’re usually relaxed and doing their thing.

The session covers baby solo portraits and can include shots with family as well. Parents and siblings are welcome to be part of it, not just observers. I capture different expressions and moods, and I make sure to get both the “grandma wants to frame this one” shots and the more candid, personality-driven ones.

The studio wardrobe is available at no extra charge. There are options for babies, toddlers, and older siblings, as well as for moms who want to be in a few shots.

Do You Need a Cake Smash?

The most common question I get when families book a first birthday session is whether they need to add a cake smash. The answer is: only if you actually want one.

Cake smashes are great. They’re fun, they’re messy, and the photos are often the most memorable ones from a baby’s entire first year. But they’re not the default. If the idea of frosting in your baby’s hair and ears doesn’t appeal to you, or if you want a cleaner, more classic set of first birthday portraits, you can absolutely skip it.

The smash is a separate option within a first birthday session, not something that comes automatically. You can also combine them: portraits first while things are still tidy, then the cake comes out. That’s the most common version for families who want both.

For more detail on what cake smash sessions look like and include, those are covered separately.

First Birthday Photos as Part of the First Year

If you’ve worked with me through the newborn session or the sitter session, the first birthday is the final piece of the first year. Looking at those images side by side — newborn, sitter, first birthday — is one of those things that’s hard to explain until you do it. The change in one year is remarkable in a way that one photo on its own doesn’t show.

For families enrolled in the First Year Membership, the first birthday session is the final milestone in the package. It’s the bookend to the newborn session, and it completes the arc. If you haven’t done a membership but have done earlier sessions with me, the first birthday still fits naturally into that visual record.

If this is your first session with me, that’s also completely fine. First birthday sessions work as standalone bookings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a first birthday session have to include a cake smash?

No. A cake smash is a separate option you choose deliberately, not something automatically included in a first birthday session. You can book portraits only, smash only, or both.

What’s the best age to book a first birthday session?

Around the actual first birthday, with flexibility on either side. Booking a few weeks before or after is common. If you want to time the session close to the birthday party, that works too.

Can parents and siblings be in the photos?

Yes. The session is focused on the birthday child, but parents and siblings are welcome for family shots in addition to the baby solo portraits.

How far in advance should I book?

A few weeks at minimum, especially if you have a specific date window in mind. Spring and fall tend to book up faster than other seasons.

Do you offer birthday sessions beyond the first birthday?

Yes! I offer birthday session for children from age two through the teen years. To learn more about what those sessions look like, read Birthday Portrait Sessions in Avon, Simsbury, and the Farmington Valley.
