Birthday Portrait Sessions in Avon, Simsbury, and the Farmington Valley

The first birthday gets a lot of attention. After that, birthday photos tend to fade into party snaps on someone’s phone. But kids change so much between two and twelve that skipping all of those years feels like a real gap in the record.

At my studio in Farmington, CT, I do birthday portrait sessions for kids at every age: toddlers who can’t hold still, five-year-olds who love to make silly faces, and tweens who walk in looking skeptical and leave with a mix of fun and introspective portraits. Birthday portrait sessions in Avon, Simsbury, and the Farmington Valley are a nice tradition for families to build into the calendar year, and one that are so much fun to look back at ten years later.

Why Annual Birthday Portraits Are Worth It

While it’s wonderful to mark each birthday with a portrait session, looking back at the side-by-side through the years is ultimately the best part.

A portrait taken every year on or around a child’s birthday builds a visual timeline that’s fun to look at in a way that scattered party photos aren’t. Age three next to age six next to age nine shows you something a single portrait can’t. It’s a visual diary of how a child changes, year by year.

The birthday is also a natural prompt. A lot of families tell me they’ve been meaning to do portraits, and having a built-in occasion makes it easy to actually do it. The session replaces the “let’s get photos taken sometime” that never quite happens.

It’s also something that can be just for them. No sharing the frame with siblings, no getting lost in a larger family session. Each year, parents can walk away with something made specifically for that kid: a single print, a small album, whatever feels right.

Toddlers and the 2nd and 3rd Birthday

Toddlers are their own category. They have enormous personalities, no patience for anything, and almost no cooperation, but they are fun and silly and curious, which results in some of the best photos.

Two- and three-year-olds keep sessions moving in a way you can’t manufacture. I follow the toddler’s lead more than any other age group. The goal is to catch real expressions and real moments, not to manufacture polished ones. Parents who come in expecting chaos usually leave surprised at how many usable shots we got out of a short window of toddler cooperation.

The studio wardrobe has toddler-appropriate options that photograph well, and the space is set up to make this age group comfortable rather than overwhelmed.

School-Age Kids and the 4th Through 10th Birthday

This is the most underserved age range in family photography, and I say that every time because it’s true. By the time kids are 4 or 5, most families have stopped doing regular portraits outside of school and sports. But this is also when expressions start to look like the adult they’ll eventually be. When interests are forming. When the “big kid” phase is actually happening in real time.

Birthday sessions for school-age kids run very similarly to personality portrait sessions. These sessions are relaxed and low-pressure, and they are focused on who the kid actually is right now. Some families add a quick family or sibling shot at the end. Others keep it purely for the birthday kid. Both are fine requests.

You’re always welcome to bring birthday balloons or a simple cake, but other than that there’s nothing themed or staged about these sessions. It’s just your kid, photographed well, at the age they’re at.

Tweens and Preteens: Bringing a Friend

Older kids and preteens are a different kind of session. By this age, the “cute kid” energy has shifted into something more specific and individual, and portraits at this age can actually look like the person you know. That’s worth documenting.

The session is still focused on the birthday kid, but one thing I offer for older children is the option to bring a close friend along for a few shots. Friends matter a lot at this age, and having one in the room tends to relax a tween in a way that just about nothing else does. A kid who walks in a little stiff is usually a completely different person the second their best friend is standing next to them.

The Farmington Valley Studio: Central to Avon, Simsbury, and Beyond

My studio is at 29 Mill Street in Farmington (Unionville), CT. For most Farmington Valley families, that’s a short drive. Avon and Simsbury are both close. Canton, Burlington, Granby, and West Hartford are all within easy reach.

I photograph families from across Hartford County and throughout central Connecticut, and some clients travel from further out. If you’re in Avon or Simsbury and have been looking for a portrait studio nearby, I’d love to have you in. Birthday sessions in particular are a low-stakes way to try a new studio, since the session is focused on one kid rather than coordinating the whole family.

Frequently Asked Questions

What age range do you photograph for birthday sessions?

All of them! First birthdays through the teen years. Each age has its own energy and I have worked with all of them.

Can my child bring a friend to their session?

Yes, for older kids (roughly 8 and up). Friends tend to relax kids at this age and often produce some of the best photos. Just let me know when you book.

Is there anything different about a birthday session vs. a regular children’s portrait session?

Structurally, no. It’s a standard portrait session timed around a birthday. For first birthdays, many families opt for a Cake Smash Session, but beyond the first birthday the session is closer to a standard portrait session. Some families add a simple birthday prop, but nothing is themed or required. The timing is what makes it special.

How far in advance should I book?

A few weeks at minimum. Fall tends to fill up faster than other seasons, so if your child has an October or November birthday, earlier is better.
