Which Photography Session Type Is Right for You?

Every session I offer comes with the same foundation: full-resolution digital images, wardrobe and styling help, a complete session guide, and professional editing. What changes across my three primary session types is time, and time is what gives us flexibility, variety, and room to breathe. In this post, I’ll guide you through figuring out out how much of it you need in order to determine which photography session type is right for you.

A Note on Session Lengths and Image Counts

Before we get into the specifics, a couple of things worth knowing. Session lengths are guidelines, not strict cutoffs. I’m not watching the clock and wrapping things up the moment time is up. That said, I do schedule multiple sessions in a day, which means it’s possible to run short on time if you’ve booked a shorter session and need more time than expected. For that reason, I always recommend booking the longer session if you’re on the fence, especially for newborns and toddlers.

Image counts are also estimates and are listed as minimums. I don’t cap or limit my galleries. If I take a great photo, it goes in. Sessions typically yield more images than the numbers below suggest. The final count does vary depending on your subject, the pace of the session, and how many looks or groupings we work through.

The Petite Session

Up to 30 Minutes, 15+ Images

The Petite is a focused, efficient, budget-friendly session that works best when the subject is easy to photograph and the goal is straightforward. Think: one person, or a subject who takes direction well and doesn’t need a lot of warm-up time.

I most often recommend the Petite for maternity sessions (solo or with a partner), sitter sessions for babies who have reached the sitting-up milestone, and cake smash or first birthday sessions where it’s just the birthday child. These sessions have a natural rhythm to them, and thirty minutes is genuinely enough time to work through a solid variety of images without anyone feeling rushed.

The Petite can technically be used for newborn sessions, but I don’t typically recommend it. Newborns are unpredictable. They need to eat, they need to be soothed, they may need a diaper change mid-session, and rushing that process doesn’t serve anyone. If budget is a concern and a newborn session is what you’re after, let’s talk through your options before defaulting to the shortest session length.

The Classic Session

Up to 60 Minutes, 30+ Images

The Classic is my most versatile session type and a great starting point for most families. It gives us enough time to work through a good mix of posed and candid images without feeling like we’re racing.

I recommend the Classic for small families, maternity sessions where siblings are involved, and cake smash or first birthday sessions where parents or a sibling want to be part of the photos. It’s also a strong choice for family portraits when you want a well-rounded gallery with both traditional groupings and some looser, more candid moments. You’ll walk away with enough variety to have real options when it comes time to choose your favorites.

If your family is small and relatively easy to photograph, the Classic will likely give you everything you need. If you’re not sure whether Classic or Signature is the right call, keep reading.

The Signature Session

Up to 90 Minutes, 45+ Images

The Signature is the full experience. It’s the session I reach for when I want to make sure we have plenty of time, plenty of variety, and zero pressure.

I strongly recommend the Signature for newborn sessions, especially when there are siblings involved. Newborns require patience, and having that extra cushion of time means we’re not skipping setups or rushing through sibling portraits to stay on schedule. Wondering what, exactly, a newborn session entails? Read What to Expect During a Studio Newborn Photoshoot.

The Signature is also the right choice for larger families or families with multiple children who want a thorough variety of images: individual portraits of each child, sibling groupings, full family photos, and each parent with the kids. That kind of coverage takes time to do well. If you have a shy child or a strong-willed toddler who tends to need some warm-up time, and they’re part of a larger family group, the Signature gives us the buffer we need to let them come around without cutting into the rest of the session. We often don’t use the full 90 minutes, but it’s good to have it.

One more thing worth knowing: the Signature is also the only session type that allows for a fully custom outdoor location. All of my sessions are available indoors in the studio or outdoors at a predetermined location, but if you have a specific spot in mind, the Signature gives you that flexibility.

A Quick Note About The 15-Minute Studio Mini

Separate from the three primary session types, I also offer a 15-minute in-studio mini for quick, single-subject portraits. These are designed for older children who can easily be photographed in a short window, think personality portraits or a simple updated photo of your kid without the full session commitment. These are not suitable for babies, toddlers, or any subject who needs time to warm up.

I also offer seasonal mini sessions throughout the year, which are limited-availability, themed events at a set price. Those are a different format entirely and are covered in more detail in their own post: Mini Sessions: Are They Right for You?

How I Help You Decide

When a new client reaches out, I usually ask a few questions before making a recommendation: How many people are in your family? How old are your kids? And what are you hoping to walk away with, a few beautiful portraits or a full gallery with a good variety of poses and groupings?

From there, I’ll suggest the session type I genuinely think will get you the results you’re looking for without leaving you wishing you’d had more time. I’m not in the business of upselling you into a longer session you don’t need. But I’ll also be honest with you if I think a shorter session is going to leave us both feeling like we left something on the table.

The best session is the one where you feel unhurried, your kids feel comfortable, and we get through everything on your list without watching the clock. That’s what I’m always aiming for.

Still Not Sure?

That’s what inquiries are for. Reach out and tell me a little about your family and what you have in mind, and I’ll point you in the right direction. There’s no pressure and no commitment required to have that conversation. I’d rather help you figure out the right fit upfront than have you book something that doesn’t quite work for your situation.

If you’re expecting a baby and thinking ahead, you might also want to take a look at my First Year Membership, which bundles your newborn, sitter, and first birthday sessions together at a savings. It’s a great way to make sure you don’t miss any of the milestones that go by faster than you’re expecting. You can read more here: Why Book a Newborn Photo Package to Document Baby’s First Year?
