If you’ve ever signed up for a mini session and then immediately thought, “Great. Now I have to figure out what everyone is wearing,” you’re in very good company.
Valentine’s Day minis are meant to be fun. They’re quick, playful, and full of personality. But the outfit planning part? Not so much. Suddenly you’re standing in Target with a tiny sweater in one hand, a cranky toddler in the other, wondering how quickly you can just grab something and be done with it.
One of my goals as a photographer is to make this whole process as painless as possible, because planning photos should not feel like a part-time job. Along with the studio wardrobe, which has some adorable new pieces I’ve specifically curated for Valentine’s Day minis, I’ve put together this guide to help take the guesswork out of getting your kids dressed. You’ll find simple do’s and don’ts, along with suggestions for outfits I think will photograph beautifully and work well for real kids, complete with shopping links.

Valentine’s Day Colors That Photograph Well
This is one of the rare times I’ll encourage color. Valentine’s sessions are meant to feel cheerful and playful, so lean into it a bit.
Colors that work beautifully for Valentine’s Day mini session outfits:
-
Red
-
Pink
-
White
-
Cream
-
Soft neutrals
-
Small heart prints
-
Festive words like “LOVE” or “Be Mine”
These colors pop nicely on camera without overwhelming skin tones.
What I recommend skipping:
-
Black or very dark colors. They tend to feel heavy and don’t photograph as softly.
-
Neon pink. It reflects strangely and can cast color onto faces.
-
Super busy patterns, characters or giant logos.

Let’s Talk Reality For a Second
Kids and fancy outfits have a complicated relationship.
If it’s itchy, stiff, tight, or requires constant adjusting, it’s probably not worth it. I’d much rather photograph a kid in a comfy sweater who can move than a perfectly styled outfit they hate and want to remove immediately.
Pro tip from someone who has photographed a lot of children:
If they can sit, stand, and walk without tugging at it, you’re on the right track.
Outfit Ideas by Age
Babies and toddlers
This age group is all about soft fabrics and simple silhouettes.
Great options:
-
Knit rompers
-
Sweaters with subtle heart details
-
Long-sleeve onesies paired with bloomers
-
Tutu skirts with a plain top
-
Soft leggings and knee socks
At this stage, cute usually wins without much effort. And it never hurts to bring a backup outfit.
Kids
This is where you can have a little fun without going overboard.
Some easy Valentine’s Day mini session outfit ideas for kids:
-
Red or pink sweater with jeans
-
Light pink or white button-down with neutral pants
-
Simple dress with tights
-
Corduroy skirt paired with a festive tee
-
Valentine’s graphic shirt layered under a cardigan
Layers are your friend. They add texture, help with temperature changes, and give us options if a quick swap is needed.
Shoes, Accessories, and the Little Things
Barefoot is best for these sessions, but if you’d like to include shoes just avoid athletic sneakers. Simple slip-ons, loafers, or ballet flats photograph much cleaner.
Accessories should be minimal:
-
Small hair bows or clips are great
-
Headbands are fine if your child tolerates them
-
Skip anything they’ll want to take off mid-session
Want a few fun props to use in your photos? We have balloons and heart-shaped sunglasses but you’re also welcome to bring a few small props of your own.

And remember, at the end of the day, Valentine’s Day mini sessions are about capturing your kids as they are right now. The outfits help set the tone, but they’re not the star of the show. Your kids are.
